  16. <p>     For Israelis abroad, a new state of siege has begun. Their
  17. embassy in Washington, the U.N. mission and consulates in nine
  18. U.S. cities were put under increased protection after two weeks
  19. of anti-Jewish bombings. In New York City an after-midnight
  20. caller to the FBI warned of possible car bombings at two Israeli
  21. offices. The city responded by increasing patrols around Israeli
  22. buildings and blocking entrances with concrete barriers and
  23. trucks loaded with sand.
  24. </p>
  25. <p>     More than 100 representatives of New York's Jewish community
  26. gathered at city hall for a security briefing. Senior police
  27. officers told them that "based on all the things happening in
  28. the world right now," the city was taking the threat seriously.
  29. Though Israeli targets seemed to be most at risk, everyone was
  30. urged to be vigilant. "To the best of our knowledge," said Michael
  31. S. Miller, executive director of the Jewish Community Relations
  32. Council, "there have been no threats directed at the Jewish
  33. community." But as the bombing of the World Trade Center reminds
  34. Americans, almost anything could become a target.

  36. <p>     Fighting the faceless terrorists will be no easier this time
  37. around. Israeli, American and British officials are convinced
  38. that the attacks in Buenos Aires and London, and possibly a
  39. bomb that destroyed a commuter plane in Panama, were the work
  40. of Iran's global network of killers. Obscure Lebanon-based affiliates
  41. of Hizballah have claimed responsibility, but most intelligence
  42. experts agree with Uri Dromi, the Israeli government spokesman.
  43. Said he: "We have no evidence to present in court, but still
  44. we see Iranian fingerprints." A defecting Iranian diplomat has
  45. told Argentine officials that the blast in Buenos Aires was
  46. directed by a military attache and a cultural attache at the
  47. Iranian embassy.

  49. <p>     Regardless of who is sponsoring them, the apparently coordinated
  50. explosions in several countries provide clear warning of more.
  51. "We don't know if this current wave is over," says an official
  52. in Washington. Says another government expert on terrorism:
  53. "We know that Hizballah has established an infrastructure in
  54. the U.S. and Canada. You have reason for concern."
